Kamiakin girls fall to Franklin 64-51

By Jack Millikin, Tri-City Herald

TACOMA -- Not many teams around the state were truly prepared to face the Kamiakin girls basketball team this season.

This time, however, it was the Braves who weren't ready for the Franklin Quakers.

Kamiakin's dreams of an undefeated season and a state championship ended in one fell swoop Thursday at the Tacoma Dome after Franklin outshot, outrebounded, outdefended and otherwise outplayed the Braves in a 64-51 3A state quarterfinal win at the Hardwood Classic.

"This obviously sucks. We've got two games left to finish strong," said Khadidja Toure, the Braves' senior guard. "It's fourth place or nothing at all."

Kamiakin (23-1) will play Shorecrest (20-7) -- a 39-32 quarterfinal loser to Cleveland -- at 12:15 p.m. today for a spot in Saturday's fourth-sixth-place game. Franklin (23-3) will face Cleveland (21-6) in today's semifinals.

RICHLAND — The Kamiakin girls want it all this season.

They want all the fun and fanfare of Saturday's 76-46 3A regional basketball win over Lakes in Richland, which earned the Braves a repeat trip to the 3A state tournament in Tacoma.

Since they're going to be over there anyway, they might as well grab a state title while they're at it.

"If we execute our half-court game as well as our transition game, I don't have any doubts we'll be playing for a state championship," said Kamiakin coach Tammy Hutchison of the team's 23rd consecutive victory without a loss this season.

The Braves (23-0), who finished fifth at the 3A state tournament last season, will play their opening game at the Hardwood Classic on Thursday. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association will release the brackets today.

Kamiakin got off to a slow start, trailing 4-2 after Lancers' seniors Aubre Mitchell and Anitaka Knight both scored on the low block inside the first 70 seconds. Kamiakin then missed its next five shots from the field, but there wasn't much cause for concern on the Braves' bench.

"This team trusts each other, and we're always communicating," said Kamiakin sophomore guard Sira Toure, who finished with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting.

After a solid start, Lakes eventually got the message about the Braves' guard Khadidja Toure: Once the all-state senior gets going, there's no stopping her.

With 5:02 left in the first and Kamiakin still trailing 4-2, Khadidja split two defenders in the lane to tie the score at 4. Seconds later, she forced a jump ball and the Braves regained possession. Sira then drained a 3-pointer off an assist from Courtney Nelson on the left wing.

Khadidja got her first steal on the Lancers' inbound and cruised in for an easy layin and a 9-4 Kamiakin lead. She recorded four steals in the first quarter alone and finished with six overall.

Unfortunately for Lakes, the Braves were just getting started. By the time the second-quarter buzzer sounded, Kamiakin led 40-14 and was all but packing its bags for Tacoma.

Kamiakin girls run by Eastmont for district title

By Jack Millikin, Tri-City Herald

KENNEWICK -- The last time the Kamiakin girls basketball team faced Eastmont, the Braves barely squeaked out a three-point home win after being forced to match the Wildcats slower, halfcourt style of play.

This time, the Braves wanted to run. They insisted on it.

Eventually, Kamiakin got what it wanted, and that spelled bad news for Eastmont. the Braves erased a seven-point first-quarter deficit and pulled away for a 68-51 win in Kennewick in the Class 3A District 5/6 championship.

Kamiakin (22-0) landed its second consecutive state berth, earning a spot in the first round of the regional round of the state tournament Saturday at Art Dawald Gym in Richland. The Braves will face the No. 6 seed out of District 3/4 at 6 p.m.

Eastmont (16-6) will host University at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a loser-out bid for the No. 2 seed to state.

The Wildcats got off on the right foot, mainly those of all-CBBN post Charity Degman, who scored six points in the first quarter and sparked her team to an early 12-5 lead. It didn't help that the Braves were getting outrebounded badly -- 15-8 in the first quarter, including seven offensive rebounds for Eastmont.

"We weren't doing a good job adjusting, but we started pressing and getting in their faces," Kamiakin guard Khadidja Toure said. "It was nice to see us come together."

The Braves settled down and found their game in the second quarter. Courtney Nelson hit a pair of free throws and Amanda Miller scored inside off an assist from Lindsey Schauble to spark a 16-2 run that put Kamiakin up 25-20 with 48 seconds left in the half.

Once the Braves had the lead, they never looked back.

"We came out in a triangle-and-two to try to deny Khadidja and Courtney," Eastmont coach Brent Darnell said. "Once they figured out how to beat it, that's when they went on their big run in the second quarter."

Nelson scored 12 of her game-high 24 points in the third quarter. She capped her outburst with a 3-pointer from the left wing as Kamiakin opened up a 44-22 lead with 3:50 left in the third. She and Toure combined for 19 points during the quarter. Toure finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and six steals.
